An Amanda run is always initiated by you, possibly from the commandline or as a crontab entry. Setting the value of the runspercycle parameter is your way of telling Amanda how many days you plan to execute amdump during one dumpcycle assuming one run per day. This supplies Amanda with the necessary information to calculate how often it needs to do full backups in order to complete a full backup within the defined dumpcycle.
Please see amanda.conf(5) for information on amanda.conf parameters.
