:I don't know much about the protocol (I'll send Jean-Louis, who does, along), but I'm excited to hear that you're re-implementing this in Perl! However, I notice that you're using 2.5.0p2, which is pretty old. In 2.6.1, there is a significant perl library available (http://wiki.zmanda.com/pod/) and I'm workin on an asynchronous IPC library that you may also find useful (see http://github.com/djmitche/amanda/tree/perltaper/perl/Amanda/IPC/).
