At the moment Charles is going down a rabbit hole, reconciling issues with specific Gnu tar versions and Linux distributions. He has spotted a missing patch from 2013 that is causing silent data corruption when backing up large (>8GiB) sparse files (has recently been giving him hives). He hopes to update the Amanda wiki FAQ on tar versions once the dust has settled from filing bug reports with upstream distribution and tar source maintainers.
