About myself

I'm a software developer (C/C++/PHP/language of the moment), freelance technical writer, and MediaWiki power-user. I adopted MediaWiki as my primary note-taking system early 2006 and it works great. I couldn't function the same way without it.

My interest in Amanda

As of March 2008, I'm setting up Amanda server under FreeBSD 6.3 to backup my workstations, the machine instances I create for software testing purposes, and the wikis I maintain for myself and others.

I'll be keeping extensive notes in my own wiki, and possibly contributing some of that content back to the Zmanda wiki if my personal content fills any gaps in the public wiki docs.

Comment on Zmanda wiki

This wiki could probably use more categories.

I've come to the opinion that categories aren't especially useful in locating content for viewing. Page navigation or search is usually faster. On the other hand, I find categories have an essential role in wiki grooming, maintenance, content refactoring, and new page creation (locating suitable template page for quick cut and paste of TOC structure or resources linked).

As one example, it's rarely effective to use "search" for pages you ought to have which have slipped through the cracks ("search" displays hits in no particular order, often larded with many false positives that spill across multiple result pages).

In my own wiki, categories are usually the quickest way to determine follicle density and whether a topic area needs braids, a brush cut, or a comb-over.

Contact me

You'll probably want to use the wiki e-mail function. My response latency on the gmail account I associate with public wikis ranges from a day to a week if I'm busy with other things.
