Should I use client/server software compression or hardware compression?

<thead> </thead>
no compression client software compression server software compression hardware compression
cpu usage low high on client high on server low
network usage between client and server reduced
holding disk usage reduced reduced reduced = reduced I/O and space
backup time increased increased increased = because of CPU overhead
transfer to device reduced reduced reduced = reduced I/O
device space reduced reduced reduced reduced = use less space
DAR recovery unavailable Unavailable DAR = Fast restore of a single file in a large backup
  • Disk size have increase faster then cpu speed, so software compression is less effective than many years ago.
  • Hardware compression is often better than software compression
  • Your choice depend of the resource available
