Runtapes is a parameter that can be set in amanda.conf(5) and informs Amanda how many tapes can be used for a single execution of amdump. This number of tapes makes up one backup volume. When a volume is one tape, Amanda will only use the amount of that tape needed during a single backup run. Similarly, when a volume is more than one tape, Amanda will only use as many of the tapes needed for that run. If less than "runtapes" number of tapes are used during a run, the unused tape or tapes will be next in line for use on the subsequent run. When setting a parameter such as tapecycle, you are setting this value in terms of backup volumes.
