A single unit of storage for backup data. A volume can be erased all at once before it is overwritten. Amanda labels each volume, and uses the labels to locate the data contained on the volumes.

For backups to tape, a volume is simply a tape. For other kinds of storage, Amanda still uses the same model, but we use the more general term "volume" to include vtapes, S3 volumes, RAIT volumes, etc.
